Addiction isn’t the same for every addict so using a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment and recovery not only doesn’t make sense, it’s often ineffective. As a society, we’ve been fed the narrative that addicts must “hit rock bottom” before they’re ready, willing, and able to accept help and live a sober life. We’ve been told that addicts need “tough love” from their loved ones by cutting them out of their lives so they can see the negative impact and consequences of their choices.
Sounds harsh, right? That’s because it is. At Rally Point in West Palm Beach, we take a different approach to drug and alcohol addiction because we’ve seen that the traditional way doesn’t work for most people. Our addiction treatment programs are tailored to the patient’s unique needs, and based on love and inclusion in a family-like atmosphere. In this article, we’ll explain some things you should know about addiction so you can see how our approach to addiction treatment can help you or a loved one get on the path to recovery.
What is Addiction? It May Not Be What You Think…
Most people think that when a person uses drugs or alcohol on a regular basis, that person will develop a physical dependency, and when cut off, will experience painful withdrawal. To them, this is “addiction.” However, this isn’t a completely accurate picture because drug and alcohol use alone won’t cause addiction. So what does?
In Johann Hari’s TED Talk presentation – Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong – he discusses why some people develop addictions and why others don’t. He found in his research that addiction isn’t caused by consistent exposure to the substance, nor any moral or personality shortcoming. Instead it has to do with the human desire to seek connections, and when we can’t make connections to others (due to whatever reason) we’ll turn to other things to fill that void.
“Human beings have a natural and innate need to bond, and when we’re happy and healthy, we’ll bond and connect with each other, but if you can’t do that, because you’re traumatized or isolated or beaten down by life, you will bond with something that will give you some sense of relief. Now, that might be gambling, that might be pornography, that might be cocaine, that might be cannabis, but you will bond and connect with something because that’s our nature. That’s what we want as human beings.” – Johann Hari
What we know about addiction has come a long way but more work is needed to change misconceptions about this disease and how to treat it. Isolating and stigmatizing those who suffer from addiction are against our philosophy. We believe having a community atmosphere and including loved ones throughout treatment and recovery are key to a patient’s success.
